The Hanácké derby against SK Hanácká Slavia Kroměříž and SK Sigma Olomouc still carries weight: regional champions of Haná eight times between 1920 and 1931, champions of Moravia five times in the same run, and winners of the Czechoslovak amateur title in 1928. Two third-place finishes in the Czechoslovak First League, in 1935/36 and 1936/37, and a lost cup final against SK Olomouc ASO in 1939/40, marked the club's best years before the war.

What followed was decades of enforced renaming. Under communist rule the club passed through JTO Sokol II Prostějov, JTO Sokol ČSSZ Prostějov, DSO Tatran Prostějov and TJ Slovan Prostějov, then merged in 1959 into TJ Železárny Prostějov. A further merger, with Brno's FC LeRK in 1996, produced SK LeRK Prostějov, and only in 2006, once the club had been reorganised as a joint-stock company, did the name settle as 1. SK Prostějov.

Goalkeeper Ivo Viktor started out here in 1960 before going on to win the European Championship with Czechoslovakia in 1976. Vlastimil Petržela played for the club either side of the mid-1970s and later coached, taking Zenit to a Russian Cup. Fans still call the team Eskáčko, short for Sportovní Klub.

Home games are played at the Stadion Za Místním nádražím, in use since 2003. Prostějov currently play in the Chance Národní Liga, the second tier of Czech football. It was in the spring of 1904 that the club was founded.
