Doha in 2022 offered a strange kind of homecoming: Qatar's national side stood on an Asian Games podium for the second time, taking silver at a tournament they had already reached once before, on their own floor in 2006, only to lose again — this time in Hangzhou, to the Philippines. Sixteen years apart, the same outcome.

The team came late to the sport's top table. Its federation had existed since 1964, but a first FIBA tournament did not come until 1981, a sixteenth-place finish at the Asia Championship that gave little hint of what followed. A first World Cup qualification arrived only in 2006, the same year as that Asian Games final. Bronze at the Asia Championship followed twice more, in 2003 and 2005.

Qatar have leaned increasingly on players who qualify through naturalisation rather than birth. Jarvis Hayes, once an NBA draft pick, wore the maroon and white at the 2013 Asia Cup; Brandon Goodwin remains on the current roster. Against Saudi Arabia, the closest thing the team has to a fixture with weight behind it, Qatar hold a narrow 5-4 edge across nine meetings since 2011, mostly decided in qualifiers and Gulf Cooperation Council games.

Home is scattered rather than fixed — the Aspire Dome in Doha, with its smaller halls tucked inside a 15,500-capacity complex, shares duty with Al Janoub Arena in Al Wakrah and the Al Gharafa Arena. In 2027, Doha will host the World Cup itself.
