Guo Shiqiang took charge of the national team in July 2024, the latest name in a coaching line that stretches back to when the side first travelled abroad in 1913, losing 26-8 to the Philippines in Manila. China joined FIBA in 1936 and reached the Berlin Olympics that same year, long before the programme had anything resembling the depth it would later build.
That depth showed itself most clearly through the "Three Mobile Great Walls" of Yao Ming, Wang Zhizhi and Mengke Bateer, who carried the team through Olympic appearances in Atlanta, Athens and Beijing, each ending in eighth place. No China side has finished higher at the Games, and none managed better than eighth at a FIBA World Cup either, a mark set in 1994.
Asia has been a different matter entirely. China has won the FIBA Asia Cup sixteen times, a run that started in 1975 and stretched through to 2015, interrupted only by the "Golden Generation" of the 1990s failing to add continental titles to the individual reputations of players like Liu Yudong and Sun Jun. The team, known as Team Dragon, also took eight Asian Games gold medals, most recently in 2018.
Japan and South Korea remain the sides China measures itself against in Asian competition, with the 1997 and 2009 Asia Cup finals — both lost, to South Korea and Iran respectively — standing as the closest the team has come to a continental setback in the modern era. There is no fixed home ground; matches rotate between arenas in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, with Wukesong Arena among the venues used most often.
Sixteen Asia Cup titles is a number no other nation in the competition's history has come close to matching.
