South Korea remains a fixture near the top of Asian basketball, still chasing the FIBA Asia Cup titles that eluded it through the 2000s and 2010s while China and Iran have overtaken it as the region's benchmark. The gap with the rest of the world has been harder to close: the team has never reached an Olympic or World Cup podium, its best showings an eighth place at the 1948 Olympics and eleventh at the 1970 World Cup, played in Ljubljana.
Continentally the record reads differently. Two Asia Cup golds, in 1969 and 1997, sit alongside eleven silvers and twelve bronzes, a spread that says more about consistency than dominance — Korea has almost always been in the conversation, rarely the last team standing. The Asian Games have been kinder, with four golds, the most recent in 2014 under Yang Dong-geun, who captained that squad after four MVP awards in the domestic league.
No rivalry defines the team more than the one with Japan, known at home as Haniljeon, a fixture sharpened by decades of shared history on and off the court. Ha Seung-jin gave the programme its first NBA player, a rare crossing that briefly put Korean basketball on an American radar it has not occupied since. Earlier, Hur Jae built a reputation physical enough to earn the nickname "the Korean Charles Barkley," a label that stuck long after his playing days.
The Korea Basketball Association, which now runs the national team, was not always called that. It began in 1925 as the Choson Basketball Association, formed under Japanese colonial rule, and only took its current name in 1948 after liberation, later absorbing the National Basketball Federation in 2016.
