HC Lučenec sits barely 27 kilometres from Rimavská Sobota.

The club now known as HKM Rimavská Sobota did not start out that way. It formed in 1995 as HK Transexpres Rimavská Sobota, carrying forward the work of ZŤS Rimavská Sobota in the late 1980s. In 2004 it merged with HC Ormet Rimavská Sobota and took its current name, HKM standing for Hokejový Klub Mestský.

They play as the Orli, the Eagles, a name pulled straight from the bird on the city's coat of arms. The 2022–23 season brought the club's first Slovak 2. Liga title, enough to earn promotion into the 1. Liga. The Slovak Extraliga has stayed out of reach so far.

Jan Slovak remains the name attached to the record books here: 279 points in 261 games. Current captain Vladislav Solomonchak arrived with a different résumé, having played in the Extraliga and the Russian VHL before taking the armband at home.
