Yaroslavl built its club around a tire factory. Locals still call the side "Shina" — the tyre.

Shinnik's best spell in the top flight came in 1997, when the club finished fourth in the Russian Premier League, its highest mark in the elite. Twice it has topped the second tier outright, in 2001 and again in 2007, and in 2021/22 it added a lower-division title in the second group of the FNL-2. Cup runs have tended to end just short: semi-finals in the Russian Cup in 2003/04 and 2017/18, and final appearances in the FNL Cup in 2012 and 2016.

The club plays in black and blue, colours fixed in 2001, with white reserved for the away kit. Home matches are held at the Shinnik Stadium in Yaroslavl, which the club lists at 21,635 seats.

Shinnik has spent most of its recent history working to get back to the level it touched in 1997.
