Sparta Rotterdam II

Veld 1 at Sportpark Nieuw Terbregge holds about 1,800 people, and the pitch doubles as the Robey Academy ground. That is where the reserve side of Sparta Rotterdam plays its home matches, a few kilometres and a whole world away from Het Kasteel, where the first team draws crowds of up to 11,000.

Nine seasons in the third tier produced no titles and no cup runs. The high-water mark came in 2021–22, a fifth-place finish, and the team never got closer. In 2024–25 they came 16th, lost the playoff and dropped into the Under-21 competition.

Sven Mijnans passed through the side in the Tweede Divisie before making his name; the route was not compulsory, and Denzel Dumfries went from the youth setup straight into the first team without a game for the reserves. That is the tension the second string lives with — it exists to prepare players, and the best of them sometimes skip it entirely.

The red and white come from the parent club, as do the nicknames the supporters use, Kasteelheren and Spartanen. So do the rivals: Jong Excelsior Rotterdam and Jong Feyenoord, the same city fixtures played out on academy pitches in front of a few hundred.

Nieuw Terbregge sits in the north-east of Rotterdam, ringed by motorway. No stands to speak of, no floodlit occasion — just a numbered pitch in a sports park, where the noise carries because there is nothing to absorb it.
