Tatran Prešov

The men who put their names to a gymnastics and fencing society in Eperjes — the Hungarian town that is now Prešov — were not setting out to build a football club. They were building a place to exercise. On 25 May 1898, the day the society was founded, its members played what is recorded as the first official football match on the territory of present-day Slovakia.

Tatran spent its best decades inside Czechoslovak football rather than Slovak. Twice, in 1964–65 and 1972–73, the side finished second in the national first division. The Mitropa Cup of 1981, won against Dinamo Zagreb in the final.

When Czechoslovakia broke up, Tatran won the first Slovak Cup, in 1992. Promotion out of the second tier in 2008, again in 2016, then a drop as far as the third division, east group, taken twice — in 2020 and 2022. The second-tier title of 2025 was the third of its kind.

The old Štadión Tatran held 14,000 and was pulled down; the rebuild ran from 2023 to 2025 and produced the Futbal Tatran Arena, all-seated, one of the venues used for the 2025 European Under-21 Championship.

The new arena seats 6,500.
