UNAN Managua

The football section of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua carries the university's own colours onto the pitch — red, yellow and blue, taken straight from the school crest — a lineage the nickname makes plain: Los Universitarios. The section was founded in 1983 and reached the Primera División two years later, in 1985.

The one Primera División title came in the Apertura 2015 play-off final against Diriangén FC, won 3-1 on aggregate. Jonathan Donado scored the winner in both the semi-final and the final, while Daniel Reyes finished the tournament as top scorer with 13 goals and got on the scoresheet in the final too. UNAN had needed a play-off of a different kind just months earlier, beating San Marcos FC 6-0 on aggregate to stay in the top flight for the 2014-15 season. The club has also picked up three Segunda División titles — Clausura 2012 and Apertura in both 2013 and 2020 — the last of those coming the year after a relegation in 2019 that sent it back down before it returned to the top division.

Home games are played at the Estadio Nacional de Fútbol in Managua, a 20,000-capacity ground. In the capital, the fixtures that draw the most attention are against Managua FC and Deportivo Walter Ferretti.

Heading into the 2026-27 Apertura, UNAN sit second in the table, still chasing the kind of finish that produced their sole league crown back in 2015 — a campaign that traces back to a university football section that only turned professional enough to reach the top flight two years after it was formed.
