The Estadio Nacional de Fútbol is where Walter Ferretti has played its home fixtures since the club left behind its origins as a police sports unit. The team began life in 1984 as DGPS, the sporting wing of the Dirección General de la Policía Sandinista, and carried that name until 1991, when it was renamed for Walter Ferretti, who died in a car accident in 1988.

The club made its top-flight debut in 1987 and has not been out of the Primera División since. Four league titles followed, in 1997/98, 2000/01, 2014/15 and the 2017 Apertura, and the Copa Primera was added twice running, in 2021 and 2022. In 2015, in the CONCACAF Champions League, Walter Ferretti held Club América to a draw.

Henry Urbina remains the club's record scorer, with 108 goals.
