A 99–94 win over Dynamo-2 in the final of the inaugural Russian Youth Championship gave Unics-2 its first trophy in 2009, and it remains the clearest measure of what the reserve side is built to do. The team had already been playing under the Unics banner since the 2001–2002 season, competing in the Russian Higher League as a testing ground for graduates of the club's academy.

It has stayed close to that peak without quite repeating it. In the VTB Youth League, which took over from the old youth championship, Unics-2 twice reached the final and lost — to CSKA-2 in 2015, having also finished second in 2013 — and added a bronze medal in 2014. CSKA-2 and Zenit-M remain the sides it measures itself against most often.

Andrey Kibenko has coached the team since 2011, returning to a role he first held between 1997 and 2002 — a rare case of continuity spanning two spells and roughly a decade apart. Among those who came through under him, Alexander Stulenkov played for Unics-2 from 2011 to 2014 and then came back to the club in 2023.

Games are played at the Small Arena of the Basket-hall, a ground that seats 1,500.
