«Die Wölfinnen»
The AOK Stadion is a shared address: Wolfsburg's men play there in front of 30,000, and on days when the women's team takes it over, the same ground shrinks to 5,200 seats.
The club itself is barely older than some of its trophies. It came together in 2003, when Volkswagen folded the women's sections of VfR Eintracht Wolfsburg and WSV Wolfsburg Wendschott into VfL Wolfsburg and started paying the bills. Two years later the side dropped into the second division, came straight back up in 2006, and from 2011–12 onward finished no lower than second in the league for thirteen straight seasons — a run no other club in the country can claim.
The turning point was 2012–13: Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and the Champions League, beating Lyon 1–0 in the final. They defended the European title the following year against Tyresö, becoming the first German club, women's or men's, to retain it. Alexandra Popp has captained the side through most of that stretch, still playing under the badge she wore as an academy graduate. The domestic cup has become close to a formality — eleven wins, the last five in a row through 2024 — while the league title has been harder to keep away from Bayern Munich, who took over as the main rival once Wolfsburg stopped losing to anyone else.
Europe is where the record thins out. Four Champions League finals since that second win in 2014, four runner-up medals — 2016, 2018, 2020, 2023 — against Lyon and Barcelona sides that had the game's biggest club to measure themselves against and, so far, has not got past it again.
