«Wildcats»
Abilene Christian's football team walked into conference play in the autumn of 2021. The move into the Western Athletic Conference that year, followed later by a shift into the United Athletic Conference, put the program on a stage it had not shared before.
The university behind the team was founded in 1906, and the football side has built its identity in the FCS ranks rather than chasing the bowl-game world of the top division. Abilene Christian has never pretended otherwise, and its playoff appearances have come on those terms.
Wildcat Stadium holds around 12,000, a number that keeps the atmosphere close rather than cavernous, and the green and white colours have marked the team since long before the conference realignments of the past few years. The nickname itself is shared with programs across the country, from Kentucky to Northwestern, but in Abilene it long predates any of the recent shuffling between conferences.
What sharpened under the WAC and UAC years was proximity to teams the Wildcats rarely used to see, and rivalry now runs through that unfamiliar company as much as through any old Texas name — measured less in history than in how the team holds up against opponents it only recently started facing on equal footing.
