Albany had never lifted the Colonial Athletic Association title before 2023, and when the Great Danes finally did, they carried the run into the FCS semifinals. The championship arrived as a co-title, but it closed a gap that six Northeast Conference crowns between 2002 and 2012 and two East Football Conference titles in the late 1990s had never quite filled.
The programme's history is not a straight line. A club team took the field in 1922, folded two years later, and stayed dormant until 1970, when it was revived as a club sport; full varsity status followed in 1973.
Purple and gold on the field, the Great Danes now measure themselves most against Stony Brook, whose meetings are played for the Golden Apple.
Bob Ford took charge of that 1970 revival and stayed for 44 years. The stadium at the heart of campus now carries his name.
