WSPG Wels spent last season in the Regionalliga Mitte and won it outright, finishing top in 2024/25 and earning promotion to the 2. Liga, Austria's second tier, where it now plays.
The name on the shirt is newer than the club itself. WSPG Wels was set up in 2023 as the legal entity carrying forward WSC Hertha Wels, after it merged in 2024 with FC Wels. The combined operation trades as FC Hertha Wels, and it kept the black and white of the old Hertha rather than the blue FC Wels had worn.
Before the merger, FC Wels had already given the city its biggest recent afternoon in football: a run to the final of the ÖFB-Cup in 2022, ended there by Red Bull Salzburg.
