Scotiabank Centre
Halifax, Canada
Formerly: Halifax Metro Centre
The Scotiabank Centre was built into the ground. Groundbreaking took place in July 1976 , and the doors opened on February 17, 1978. It has sat on Argyle Street ever since, originally branded the Halifax Metro Centre until the rebranding on September 19, 2014.
It is not a large arena by international standards. The capacity for ice hockey sits at 10,595, a number that swells to 11,093 for basketball and stretches to 13,000 if floor seating is added for a concert. Significant renovations, including the addition of 43 SkyBoxes and 11 Executive Suites in the 1990s, altered the seating dynamics, while later work between 2015 and 2017 replaced the original orange seats with navy blue.
The arena has hosted a considerable number of major events. It staged the 2000 and 2019 Memorial Cup tournaments, the 2008 IIHF World Championship, and the 2003 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. It has seen Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John, Taylor Swift, Prince, and Metallica. The official attendance record for a single event is not definitively confirmed in available sources, though Elton John sold out two nights in 2008.
