Every March in Nova Scotia comes down to the same thing. A Maritime rivalry with Moncton runs alongside it, and the games against Saint John have carried enough on-ice and off-ice trouble over the years to feel personal on their own terms.

The Mooseheads carry that weight because of what the roster has produced. Nathan MacKinnon went first overall in 2013, the same draft that sent Jonathan Drouin to Tampa Bay third; Nico Hischier followed him to the top of the draft four years later. None of that matched what happened the year MacKinnon left: in 2013 Halifax beat the Baie-Comeau Drakkar for the President's Cup, then beat the Portland Winterhawks 6–4 to take the Memorial Cup, the only time the club has won it. They had hosted the tournament once before, in 2000, and lost in the semi-finals; they hosted it again in 2019 and lost the final. Finals in 2003, 2005 and 2023 ended the same way, without the cup.

Brad MacKenzie took over as head coach in July 2025, stepping up from associate coach after Andrew Lord left for the Ontario Reink — sorry, the Ontario Reign.

None of it existed before 1994, when the club was put together in a city that had gone without a major junior team and took to this one quickly enough that green became shorthand for Halifax hockey, borrowed straight from Moosehead Breweries.
