Charlottetown sits at the centre of Prince Edward Island, and for the town the Eastlink Centre on a game night is as close as the Island gets to a big-city arena, seating 3,718 for a Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League franchise it did not raise from scratch. The Islanders arrived already formed: the team began life in 1999 as the Montreal Rocket, named for Maurice "Rocket" Richard, but annual losses near $300,000 and thinning crowds at the Bell Centre pushed the Savard family, who owned the club, to move it to Prince Edward Island in 2003 as the P.E.I. Rocket. A decade later the Savards sold again, this time to a local group led by Geoff Boyle, and for the 2013–14 season the franchise became the Charlottetown Islanders, trading Montreal red for black, harvest gold and white. The Isles, as the town calls them, have built their identity since without ever lifting the QMJHL's President's Cup. They came closest across two straight seasons: Maritimes Division champions in 2020–21 and 2021–22, and finalists both years, losing to the Victoriaville Tigres and then to the Shawinigan Cataractes in 2022. The draft record carries more weight than the trophy case — Pascal Leclaire went sixth overall in 2001 under the old Rocket name, and Daniel Sprong's path through Charlottetown to the NHL is the one locals point to when they talk about what the rink has produced. Division play keeps the Islanders tangled with the other Maritimes clubs — the Cape Breton Eagles, Halifax Mooseheads, Acadie-Bathurst Titan and Moncton Wildcats — a rivalry drawn by geography and the schedule rather than by any single named grudge, but felt every time one of those buses rolls onto the Island.
