Saint John Sea Dogs reached their first Memorial Cup final in 2011, beating the Owen Sound Attack 4–3 to become the first Atlantic Canadian team to take the national junior title. That same season they had already lifted the QMJHL President's Cup against the Gatineau Olympiques, and they added two more league championships in 2012 and 2017, though both of those runs ended in Memorial Cup final defeats, to the Edmonton Oil Kings and the Seattle Thunderbirds. The club got a second national crown in 2022, hosting the tournament in Saint John and beating the Hamilton Bulldogs 6–3.

Scott McCain and Wayne Long put the franchise together in 2005 to fill the gap left by the American Hockey League's Saint John Flames, which had pulled out of the city two years earlier. The team plays out of TD Station, in front of crowds that can reach just over 6,300.

Mathieu Joseph became the first Sea Dogs alumnus to win the Stanley Cup, lifting it with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020.

None of it means as much to the fans as the games against the Moncton Wildcats, played for the Brunswick News Rivalry Cup — a derby between the two New Brunswick cities, sharpened further by regular meetings with the Halifax Mooseheads and the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
