Shawinigan sits on the Saint-Maurice River in the Mauricie region of Quebec. The Cataractes have carried that name since 1978, after starting out in 1969 as the Shawinigan Bruins and spending a few years as the Dynamos before settling on the current one.

The town got its biggest hockey night in 2012, when Shawinigan hosted the Memorial Cup and beat the London Knights in overtime, 2–1, to win it on home ice. A decade later the Cataractes won the President's Cup as QMJHL champions, defeating the Charlottetown Islanders under head coach Daniel Renaud, and again hosted the Memorial Cup — this time falling in the semifinals.

No player is tied to the club the way Michel Brière is. The arena itself, known locally as the Centre Bionest, replaced the old Aréna Jacques-Plante, a rink that had served the town since 1937.

Under owner Marc-André Bédard, the Cataractes now play in front of a building that holds 4,300.
