The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League needed a team on the North Shore after the Sherbrooke Faucons folded at the end of the 1996–97 season, and Baie-Comeau got the replacement rather than the old club moved north — the Drakkar took the ice fresh in 1997–98, named for the Viking longship rather than anything local.

The Drakkar has built its identity on the regular season rather than the postseason. Three times it has taken the Jean Rougeau Trophy, awarded to the club that finishes top of the standings — in 2002–03, 2013–14 and again in 2023–24. The President's Cup, the league championship itself, has stayed out of reach; the closest the club came was final losses, first to the Halifax Mooseheads in 2013, then to the Drummondville Voltigeurs in 2024.

Development has been the more reliable output. Charles Hudon and David Savard both came through the program on their way to NHL careers.
