Work began in 2005, was meant to finish by September 2004 under the original schedule, and instead dragged on through environmental protests and legal challenges before the doors opened on 15 February 2008, at a final cost of €88 million.

The design came from the French firm Chaix & Morel et associés, and the result seats 20,068, a figure that has held steady since the opening. The pitch is natural grass, and the ground still carries its original name — no rebrand, though the Bontaz Centre stand picked up a sponsor's name in 2015 without touching the stadium itself.
