The 1. Liga ragby XV serves as the second tier of men's club rugby union in the Czech Republic. Organised by the Czech Rugby Union, the competition sits directly below the top-flight Extraliga ragby XV. Established in 1993 following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the league initially operated under the name Druhá liga before adopting its current title for the 1999–2000 season.
The structure of the competition is designed to manage logistics efficiently. The regular season is typically split into two regional groups, Bohemia and Moravia, allowing teams to play a round-robin format within their respective areas. This division helps reduce travel costs for the participating sides, which usually number between seven and twelve. Following the group stage, the top teams advance to a playoff phase known as Nadstavba to determine the champion.
Success in the 1. Liga does not guarantee immediate promotion to the highest level. Instead, the winner must engage in a two-legged promotion playoff against the bottom-placed team from the Extraliga. Victory in this contest earns the club a place in the top flight for the following season. Conversely, teams from the Extraliga may be relegated to this division. The league is generally regarded as having an amateur or semi-professional nature, distinguishing it from the professional environment above.
Below the 1. Liga lies the 2. Liga ragby XV, the third tier of the national pyramid. Historical success has been shared among various clubs, with RC Havířov and RC Bystrc each recording four titles in the documented period. The competition continues to evolve, maintaining its role as a crucial stepping stone for aspiring rugby clubs in the country.
