Premiership Rugby (Austria) 2024/25

The **Alpine Rugby Championship (ARC)** operates as the premier rugby union structure for Austria, hosting the **ARC 1. Liga** as its top division. While the league began in 1992 as a strictly national contest, it transitioned into an international format in 2014, incorporating clubs from Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Croatia. This shift from the original **Austrian Rugby Bundesliga** reflects a broader strategy to elevate competitive standards through regional cooperation.

Within this framework, the Austrian Rugby Federation (ÖRV) oversees the domestic hierarchy. The **ARC 1. Liga** sits at the apex of the Austrian pyramid, governing the path from the second-tier **2. Rugby Bundesliga**. Promotion and relegation mechanisms allow movement between these levels, ensuring that the strongest teams compete at the highest level. The competition format combines a regular season with playoffs to determine the domestic champion among Austrian participants, distinct from knockout tournaments like the Austrian Rugby Cup.

Historical dominance in the Austrian context has belonged to **RC Wien**, which secured nine titles primarily during the 1990s and early 2000s. **RU Donau Wien** follows closely with eight championships, establishing itself as a consistent contender in recent years. The landscape of winners has evolved, with **Vienna Celtic RFC** claiming the title in the 2023/2024 season after a victory over **RU Donau Wien**. For the subsequent 2024/2025 campaign, **RU Donau Wien** was crowned champion following a narrow win against **RC Graz**.

Current participation includes teams such as **Rugby Oberosterreich**, **SRC Wien**, and **Vienna Celtic**, alongside **Donau Wien** and its reserve side, **Donau Wien II**. The league’s history includes periods of suspension due to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, after which normal operations resumed. The integration into the **Alpine Rugby Championship** marks a significant departure from earlier iterations like the **Alpenliga** (1993–1995) and the **Austro-Moravian League** (1997–1999), cementing its role as a central pillar of Central European rugby development.
