Seven's Europe Series - Portugal (EU) 2023/24

The Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series operates at the top tier of the European rugby sevens pyramid. Formerly known as the Sevens Grand Prix Series, the event is organized by Rugby Europe and serves as the premier regional competition for European nations. The series consists of multiple legs held throughout the summer, with the Algarve 7s in Portugal serving as one of these stops. The format involves a three-day tournament featuring pool play followed by classification playoffs. Matches are played in a 7-a-side format with 14-minute halves. The overall series champion is determined by cumulative points across all legs, with point difference acting as a tie-breaker. The men's Championship features 12 national teams competing for the title. A strict promotion and relegation system operates between the tiers, with the bottom team in the Championship relegated to the Trophy Series. The top two teams from the Trophy Series move up. In the Trophy Series, the bottom two teams are relegated to Conference 1. This structure ensures mobility between the tiers. Portugal holds the record for most titles in the history of the competition. France has recently emerged as a dominant force, winning the 2024 and 2025 Championship Series titles. The competition is distinct from the global HSBC SVNS circuit and the European Games sevens tournament. The Algarve 7s became a regular leg of the series starting in 2023. The event is hosted at the Estádio Municipal de Vila Real de Santo António. Teams such as Belgium Sevens, Czech Republic 7s, France 7s, Georgia 7s, Germany 7s, and Great Britain 7s participate in the series. The competition acts as a development pathway for European teams not in the SVNS core.
