The Six Nations Under 20s Championship is an annual European rugby union tournament for national squads. It operates as a closed league with no promotion or relegation, featuring six teams. The competition sits below the senior Six Nations Championship in the hierarchy of European rugby. It serves as a developmental platform for the participating nations.
Teams compete in a single round-robin format over five rounds. Matches are typically held in February and March. Each side plays every other team once. The winner is determined by total competition points. A bonus point system awards one point for scoring four or more tries in a match and one point for losing by seven points or fewer. A Grand Slam grants an additional three bonus points.
Tie-breakers are resolved by points difference, then total tries scored, and finally a shared title if still tied. Special honors include the Grand Slam, the Triple Crown, and the Wooden Spoon. England is the most successful team with eight Under-20 titles. France holds the current title, having won recent editions. Ireland has won five titles, and Wales has won two. Italy and Scotland have not won the title.
The tournament is distinct from the Rugby Europe Under-20 Championship, which involves lower-tier European nations. It is an elite competition for the top six European unions. The event was founded in 2008, when the age grade was lowered from Under-21 to Under-20. It replaced the Six Nations Under-21s Championship, which ran from 2004 to 2007.
