Al-Asiouti Sport edge past El-Gouna in tight affair
Al-Asiouti Sport secured a narrow 1:0 victory over El-Gouna in the Premier League's fourth round of matches on Tuesday evening at their home ground. The result keeps them on track for a strong start to the campaign, with three points added to their tally after opening the scoring through an unfortunate own goal. El-Gouna, meanwhile, remain rooted to the bottom half of the table despite creating enough chances to test their hosts' goalkeeper.
The breakthrough came in the 56th minute when El-Gouna defender Khaled Ahmed headed the ball into his own net, giving Al-Asiouti Sport a deserved lead. By then the hosts had already established their dominance with 68 per cent possession and 12 corners to show for their efforts. El-Gouna struggled to find rhythm, managing just three shots all game with only two on target. And here's the thing — despite their lack of possession, the visitors made their chances count when they mattered.
Al-Asiouti Sport had opportunities to extend their advantage, particularly in the second half. Nasser Maher saw a penalty saved in the 72nd minute, while VAR subsequently cancelled what appeared to be two goals — one for Nadhir Benbouali in the 72nd minute and another for Mostafa Zico in the 90th. The away side's frustration showed in the final moments, with Benbouali collecting a yellow card in stoppage time after a heated exchange.
The statistics paint a clear picture of a match where one team dominated but the other made their moments count. Al-Asiouti Sport registered 24 shots compared to El-Gouna's three, with four finding the target against two. The hosts completed 451 of 519 passes while El-Gouna managed 186 from 255 attempts, a reflection of the territorial advantage enjoyed throughout the evening.
Both managers made several changes during the contest, with Al-Asiouti Sport introducing five players including Karim Hafez, Mohamed Chibi and Mostafa Fathi in the 63rd minute. El-Gouna brought on two substitutions at the hour mark, while the hosts made another change just before the hour mark with Alpha Turay and David Simukonda coming on.
The result leaves Al-Asiouti Sport in second place with nine points from three games, their only blemish coming in a recent 1:2 defeat to Rizespor. El-Gouna remain in 16th position with just two points from three matches, having been unable to convert their draws into victories. They'll need to find more precision if they're to climb away from the bottom of the table.
