Al-Ahdaud claimed a 2-0 victory over Al-Tai in the opening fixture of the First Division's regular season on Friday evening. The result shifts momentum in the table, with the visitors moving into fourth place while Al-Tai remain third but now carry a loss.
For most of the match the contest felt balanced, possession shared evenly at 50-50. What separated the sides came down to efficiency — Al-Ahdaud struck seven times on target against Al-Tai's single attempt. The hosts had more attacks overall, 66 to 80, but couldn't find the net until the dying moments.
Al-Tai's defensive frailties showed through the yellow cards accumulating early. S. Al Saleem went into the book at 32 minutes, followed by M. Les at 55 and A. Al Alawi at 59. The home side made three substitutions in the second half, bringing on N. Al Hawsawi, S. Salem and Simy in quick succession.
And here's the thing about the goals — they arrived together in stoppage time. Alex Nascimento opened the scoring for Al-Ahdaud at 90 minutes, then Agi doubled the lead two minutes later. Both scorers were substituted off almost immediately after, which tells you about the manager's priorities in the final moments.
Al-Tai arrive at this game with a bruising recent record. They lost 0-5 to Al-Qadisiya on 17 August and have struggled to contain opposition attacks. To be fair, Al-Ahdaud came into this match unbeaten themselves, with two draws and a single win from three games.
Shots accuracy tells the story most clearly. Al-Ahdaud hit 39 per cent of their attempts on target compared to Al-Tai's 8 per cent — one shot on target from eight attempts. Eight corners for the hosts against nine for the visitors suggests Al-Tai pressed forward but couldn't create anything meaningful.
The result leaves Al-Tai on six points from three games, still above the visitors who sit on five. But the gap between them narrows considerably when you consider Al-Ahdaud have not lost a single match this season.
