New England Revolution ran out 3-0 winners against DC United in the MLS regular season on Wednesday night at Audi Field. The visitors took all three points in Washington, extending their advantage over their hosts in the standings.
Alhassan Yusuf opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, and doubled his tally just before half-time. The third came in the 66th minute, completing a hat-trick that left DC United with nothing to show for their efforts. Three yellow cards were issued during the first half alone — B. Raines, A. Dozzell, and M. Polster all saw them.
By then the match was already decided in terms of momentum. Revolution controlled possession at 60 per cent and created more clear-cut opportunities, with expected goals of 3.03 compared to DC United's 1.83. The hosts had more shots overall but struggled to find the back of the net, managing only three on target from twelve attempts inside the penalty area.
The statistics tell the story of a one-sided contest. Revolution completed 492 passes to DC United's 293, and their shots accuracy of 39 per cent dwarfed the hosts' 20 per cent. DC United made 24 tackles to seven, but the defensive work came after the match had slipped away. The away side's goalkeeper made three saves while DC United's keeper was called upon four times.
The result leaves DC United in 11th place on 25 points after 22 games, while Revolution move further clear in fourth with 37 points. The hosts have now lost three of their last five matches, a pattern that had started to reverse with draws against Montreal and Houston before this defeat.
