Lugano beat NSI Runavik 2:0 in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League on 6 August 2026. The Swiss side opened the door to the next stage with a comfortable victory at home. The result leaves them one step closer to the group phase.
E. Pihlstrom broke the deadlock seven minutes in with a crisp finish. By then Lugano had already settled into their rhythm, moving the ball with purpose. The away side struggled to find space in the opening exchanges and the pitch cut up badly under the pressure.
K. Behrens doubled the lead in the eightieth minute, finishing off a move that had gone unanswered for most of the contest. They closed the game out after a period where the hosts had nothing to do all evening. NSI never really threatened and the away end never stopped complaining.
Five substitutions were made overall, with Lugano bringing on A. Kendouci, Y. Cimignani, M. Przybylski, E. Pihlstrom and M. Lindh. The old head settled them down after the second goal, and the game slipped away from the visitors. NSI tried to tighten things up but had nothing to do all evening.
Statistics tell the story clearly enough. Lugano held 69 per cent possession and registered 9 shots on target against 2.98 expected goals. NSI managed just 1 shot on target with 0.54 expected goals, and were second to everything. Many shots with one goal in each half means chances went begging for both sides, but Lugano took theirs.
The 2:0 scoreline reflects a match decided in the opening quarter. Lugano now sit on the threshold of the group stage proper, while NSI must look ahead to domestic competition. The line has barely moved for the away side, but the damage is done.
