Houston Dash and Kansas City played out a 1:1 draw in the NWSL Group Stage on Saturday evening. Debinha opened the scoring for the hosts before K. Rader equalised from the penalty spot. The result leaves Houston in 12th place with 26 points and Kansas City sitting seventh on 37.
Debinha struck in the 44th minute, racing onto a through ball and finishing past the goalkeeper. Kansas City responded after the break with a flurry of attacks, though they could not find the net. By then the visitors had already pushed to 53 per cent possession, trying to break down Houston's defence.
And here's the thing about this game — it was decided by moments rather than dominance. Kansas City registered 12 shots but only three were on target, while Houston managed four on target from nine attempts. The visitors created two big chances but could not convert, and Houston were not far behind with their own opportunities.
K. Rader's penalty in the 81st minute came after a clumsy challenge in the box. She stepped up calmly and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, cancelling out Debinha's earlier effort. The hosts had brought on L. Ullmark at half-time for a tactical shift, but it was the visitors who took the lead in the second period.
To be fair, both sides showed their character in the closing stages. Houston brought on P. K. Nielsen and A. Chapman in the final minutes, while Kansas City saw three yellow cards — K. Scott, G. Robinson and P. Hocking — as the game tightened. Total passes came to 421 for the hosts and 459 for the visitors, with Kansas City completing 369 and Houston 341.
The draw does little to change either side's ambitions. Houston remain mid-table with 11 defeats from 23 games, while Kansas City's seven wins keep them in the upper half. They met in the group stage and shared the points, which may prove significant when the standings matter most.
