Match report

Kuressaare made light work of Kristiine in the Round of 32 of the cup, running out 8-0 winners at home to the visitors on Tuesday evening. The result was about as one-sided as they come, with the away side taking control almost immediately and never letting up. And here's the thing — this wasn't just a comfortable win, it was a statement.

Kuressaare struck early through Aston Visse in the sixth minute, then doubled their advantage three minutes later when Lukas Roland found the net. Kristiine should have been able to respond, but instead they gifted their opponents a third goal in the 20th minute. Andri Roomus turned the ball into his own net, and by then the match had slipped away.

The own goal at the quarter-hour mark was the turning point. To be fair, Kristiine had shown they could score — they'd hit eight past Jõgeva Wolves in their last outing — but this was a different matter entirely. Within ten minutes Jevgeni Demidov made it 4-0, and the visitors had nothing left to play for.

The second half saw Kuressaare maintain their interest without the urgency of before. Taavi Jürisoo added a fifth in the 52nd minute, and then Rasmus Lohmus came off the bench to score twice, in the 75th and 86th minutes. There was another goal in the 88th minute with no scorer listed, rounding out a night to forget for Kristiine.

The recent form of both sides tells a story of inconsistency. Kristiine's last five matches read like a rollercoaster — an 8-3 victory, this 8-0 defeat, a 4-0 win, a 0-5 loss, and a 2-3 defeat. Kuressaare have been similarly unpredictable, with results ranging from a 5-1 win to a 2-3 loss in their last five outings.

What this match confirms is that cup football remains a great equaliser, but also that some teams are simply not ready for this level. Kuressaare picked up a convincing victory, while Kristiine will need to reflect on a performance that gave them nothing to hold on to.
