Play-off upset in Lyon
Fenerbahçe produced a shock away victory against Lyon, winning 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League play-offs at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday. The Turkish side took control through two first-half goals, then weathered a spirited second-half fightback before seeing off two disallowed Lyon strikes to seal qualification.
Vedat Muriqi opened the scoring in the twenty-fourth minute, then Archie Brown added a second just four minutes later. Lyon pushed for an equaliser but could only find the net through Malik Fofana in the sixty-first minute. By then, the visitors had already built enough of a cushion to survive the home side's pressure.
Lyon had chances to level but could not convert. Loïc Openda's effort in the sixty-fourth minute was ruled offside, then Karim Boudache had a goal cancelled for the same reason in the seventy-first minute. The hosts dominated possession but never got going in the final third.
The statistics tell the story of a match where territory meant little. Lyon held 59 per cent of the ball and created 110 attacks, yet their expected goals figure sat at just 1.23. Fenerbahçe, with 41 per cent possession, registered a higher expected goals total of 1.59 — and took their chances with more clinical efficiency.
And here's the thing: both sides won thirty-one aerial duels, but the visitors were far more effective in the air. Fenerbahçe completed eighteen of their aerial battles compared to Lyon's thirteen, and their shot accuracy of 44 per cent was notably better than the hosts' 35 per cent. The clean-sheet run came to an end for Lyon, and the result leaves them facing a tough tie to come.
