Nacional Potosí saw off Independiente Petrolero 3-0 in the Apertura round 16 fixture on Saturday night. The home side took control early and never looked back, with three goals from two players securing all three points at the Estadio Víctor Agustín Ugarte.
T. Tobar opened the scoring in the fifteenth minute, giving the away defence a torrid evening from the outset. By then, Nacional had already settled into a rhythm that would trouble the visitors all night. The goal came from sustained pressure rather than a single moment of brilliance, and here's the thing — it was the pattern that followed that made the difference.
S. Pena doubled the lead in the fiftieth minute, capitalising on the visitors' inability to clear their lines consistently. The goal shifted the complexion of the game entirely, and Independiente were now chasing shadows. Pena added a second in the eighty-second minute to kill off any remaining doubt, and by then the match had become a exercise in damage limitation for the visitors.
Independiente made five substitutions in an attempt to find a response, but the changes came too late to alter the trajectory. Nacional brought on M. Tomianovic and M. Nunez in the eighty-seventh minute, content to see out the result. The away side had already substituted R. Cardozo and C. Urdininea in the sixty-third minute, followed by three more changes around the seventy-fifth minute.
The statistics tell the story neatly enough. Nacional registered six shots on target against just one from the visitors, while Independiente's shot accuracy of seven per cent reflected the quality of chances created. The hosts completed 330 successful passes to 317 for the away side, and their 40 per cent shot accuracy meant they were far more clinical in the final third.
The result leaves Nacional in tenth place on 21 points from 17 games, while Independiente remain fifth on 25 points. The gap between them has narrowed slightly, though the visitors will be disappointed to have dropped points against a side they were expected to beat comfortably.
