Independiente Petrolero

The Estadio Olímpico Patria holds 32,700 people, and on the nights Independiente Petrolero fill it, the ground sits well above the altitude most visiting teams train for — Sucre's stadium is the reason away sides arrive early to acclimatise, though that detail has faded from most match reports. It is simply home, the pitch the club has returned to since a breakaway group of players and two Franciscan priests, Tomás Aspe and Francisco Agvinaco, put a team together in the Recoleta district in 1932.

The club they formed had nothing to do with oil at first. It was called Independiente Sporting Club, its players had walked out on Club San Francisco de la Recoleta over a dispute about the matchday squad, and its colours were red and yellow, chosen in tribute to the Spanish priests who had backed the venture. The oil connection came later, in 1953, when workers from Chuquisaca's petroleum industry took over the reorganisation of the club and renamed it Independiente Petrolero. The colours changed too, to the red and white the team wears now.

Almost seven decades passed before the club won anything at the top level. That arrived in 2021, the sole Primera División title in its history, built around an Argentine forward, Martín Prost, who finished the season as top scorer with 19 goals and left for Bolívar once the title was secured. A year earlier, Independiente Petrolero had come within a penalty shootout of a different prize, losing the Copa Simón Bolívar final to Real Tomayapo 5-4 on spot-kicks.

In Sucre, the fixture that matters most is the Clásico capitalino, against Stormers Sporting Club — a rivalry that belongs to the city rather than the league table. There is a second, quieter one too, with Chaco Petrolero of La Paz, two clubs whose names still carry the same state oil company behind them. Whichever derby is on, it is the Estadio Olímpico Patria that fills, in the city where the club has stayed since 1932.
