Gualberto Villarroel SJ

December 2023 brought GV San José the Copa Simón Bolívar, the first trophy of consequence in the club's history and the result that mattered most: it opened the door to Bolivia's top flight, the División Profesional, for the first time. The following season the club did more than survive there. In the Clausura 2024 it finished second, a result that sent it into continental football for the first time — the 2025 Copa Libertadores and the 2025 Copa Sudamericana.

Getting to that point took a detour few clubs in Oruro can claim. The team began life in 1968 as Club Gualberto Villarroel, named after Bolivia's 39th president, and spent decades in the regional competitions run by the Asociación de Fútbol de Oruro, reaching that association's top division only in 2015. In 2021 the finances gave out and the club sat out official competition altogether. What followed was not, legally, a merger or takeover, but the club emerged from it renamed Club Deportivo Gualberto Villarroel Deportivo San José, carrying the crest, the motto and the light blue and white colours of the storied local side San José. That borrowed identity has its own complication: GV San José is a separate entity from San José de Oruro, the club that won the Bolivian championship in 1995, 2007 and 2018, even as both share a name and a city.

The home shirt now reads sky blue over white shorts, and the club is registered to play at Estadio Jesús Bermúdez, though league requirements have sent it as far as Estadio Hernando Siles in La Paz for some fixtures. Locally, the fixture that matters is against CDT Real Oruro, known as Totora Real Oruro — the Clásico Orureño, contested between the city's two clubs in the top division.
