And here's the thing about this game — it started with Nizhny Novgorod taking the lead through Vyacheslav Grulev in the fourteenth minute. But Volga responded quickly, with V. Sarvel equalising just ten minutes later, and Vladislav Sarvelyi putting his side ahead again before the half-hour mark. By then, the match had already taken on a nervous energy.
Volga pulled level through Astemir Khashkulov twice in quick succession around the thirty-eighth and thirty-ninth minutes, and then Andrey Nikitin added a third for the visitors in the sixty-second minute. That's when you know a home side is in trouble — when they're chasing a game after leading for most of it.
To be fair, Nizhny Novgorod had their chances. They recorded five shots on target compared to Volga's six, and had more possession at 60 per cent. For Nizhny Novgorod, this is a dropped point after five consecutive wins. They beat SKA Khabarovsk 4:2, lost to Velez 2:3, beat Tekstilshchik 3:1, won 5:1 against Neftekhimik, and saw off Shinnik 3:0 in their previous outings. A draw at home might not look like much, but it breaks a run.
Volga Ulyanovsk's away form continues to be problematic. They've lost three of their last four away games, including defeats to Shinnik 3:1 and Sochi 1:0. This draw against the league leaders is perhaps the most they could have hoped for, but they remain rooted in the bottom half of the table.
