Match report

Sheffield Wednesday moved clear at the summit of League One on Saturday, beating Peterborough 2:1 in the fifth round of the regular season. The visitors arrived with four wins and one defeat, while the hosts sat 20th with four points from five games. Yan Valery struck late to rescue a win for the away side after Benjamin Woods had equalised from an own goal.

Joshua Feeney bundled the ball into his own net in the 38th minute, giving Peterborough a fleeting lead. Woods levelled in the 47th, but the visitors responded through Valery in the 79th minute. The match saw plenty of changes, with nine substitutions recorded across both sides, including a double shift for Wednesday in the 58th minute when Jamal Lowe and Davis Keillor-Dunn came on together.

Peterborough dominated possession at 56 per cent and registered 125 attacks, yet their shot accuracy sat at just 15 per cent. They fired 13 shots on target but only found the net twice, while Wednesday converted 38 per cent of their efforts. The hosts created two big chances but could not find the finish, whereas the visitors made none and still took their points.

The result leaves Peterborough rooted to the bottom with four points from five fixtures, a run that includes three defeats and a single victory over Watford. Wednesday move to the top of the table with 12 points, their only blemish a 2:0 loss to Wolverhampton. The gap between the two sides now stands at eight points after five rounds.
