BSV Sachsen Zwickau claimed a narrow 34-33 victory over Rosengarten-Buchholz Women in the German Cup on Saturday, 23 August. The result ended a run of mixed fortunes for the hosts, who had been finding it difficult to convert their chances into wins of late. One goal separated two teams that were playing with something to prove.
The margin of victory tells you everything about a match where neither side could quite pull away. Rosengarten-Buchholz had shown signs of life in their previous outings, including a 35-33 win over Bayer Leverkusen Women in April, but this time things came to a head in the final moments. Zwickau refused to go away and took the result when it mattered.
The hosts have been uneven in their recent performances. They lost 39-19 to Leipzig in May, then bounced back with a 32-39 defeat to Regensburg Women before that. The 28-28 draw with Solingen Women in March suggested they could compete, but consistency remains a question mark. They have the deeper squad on paper, yet the results don't always reflect it.
Zwickau's recent form tells a similar story of highs and lows. They lost 37-31 away to Neckarsulm in May, then followed with defeats to Oldenburg and Halle-Neustadt. The 30-32 loss to Buchstetter SV on 31 May was particularly telling — they were close but couldn't find the breakthrough. By then, the pressure was mounting.
This result keeps both sides in contention for something meaningful in the cup. For Zwickau, it is a step forward after a string of disappointing results. Rosengarten-Buchholz will look at that one-goal margin and know they are not far off. The cup is still alive for both, and that is what counts.
