Šiauliai Edge Past Panevėžys After Early Red Card Drama
Šiauliai came out on top 1-0 against Panevėžys in the A Lyga's 27th round on Sunday. The result was decided by a single goal from D. Dovydaitis in the ninth minute, but the game's turning point came much earlier when V. Cerniauskas was sent off after just three minutes. By then, the visitors were already down to ten men and never really recovered their shape.
Cerniauskas picked up a yellow card and then a red in quick succession, leaving Panevėžys to defend for most of the match. The visitors tried to come back, but Šiauliai held their nerve despite being a man down themselves at times. The goal came from Dovydaitis, who finished cleanly after a well-worked move, and that proved to be enough.
The statistics tell an interesting story. Šiauliai had more shots off target — ten compared to four — but Panevėžys managed more shots on target, four to one. Possession was fairly even at fifty-six percent for the hosts. The visitors had more attacks overall, ninety to eighty-nine, but couldn't convert their chances into goals.
Šiauliai sit ninth with twenty-six points from twenty-six games, three wins, seven draws and sixteen losses. Panevėžys are seventh with twenty-nine points, eight wins, five draws and thirteen defeats. The gap between them remains three points, though the result gives Šiauliai a bit of momentum after a difficult run.
Looking at recent form, Šiauliai have struggled — losses to Dzūkija, Banga, Hegelmann, Kaunas Žalgiris and Žalgiris Vilnius in their last five. Panevėžys showed more resilience with draws against Dzūkija and Tobol Kostanay, plus a win over Transinvest Vilnius. This result might not change their positions, but it could shift the mood inside both camps.
