Lithuania's all-time leading scorer for the national team, Valdas Ivanauskas went on to play for Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.
That institution nearly disappeared in 2009, when financial trouble wound up the original legal entity. A new club, VMFD Žalgiris, was built on what was left of it, and in 2014 the two histories were formally merged.
Žalgiris has won the A Lyga eleven times, most recently in 2024, and added fourteen Lithuanian Cups on top of that.
Europe took longer to open up. In 2022/23, a Europa League qualifying run that fell just short still carried Žalgiris into the Europa Conference League group stage, the first time a Lithuanian club had reached the group stage of any European competition . It managed the same again in 2024/25.
The club's own story starts earlier than any of it, on 16 May 1947, when it was registered in Vilnius as Dinamo. It became Spartak in 1948, and only in 1962 took the name Žalgiris, after the Battle of Grunwald in 1410.
