Spartak Moscow defeated Zenit St. Petersburg 2:0 in the fifth round of the Russian Premier League on Saturday evening. The visitors took an early lead through their own goal and extended it before the break. The result moves Spartak level on points with Zenit, though the visitors remain on top of the table.
W. Barrios turned the ball into his own net in the twelfth minute, giving Spartak the advantage they would not relinquish. Roman Zobnin added a second before the interval with a composed finish in the thirty-eighth minute. Zenit had no response and spent the remainder of the half chasing the game.
The statistics tell a familiar story — possession without penetration. Zenit held sixty per cent of the ball and attempted twenty-eight crosses, yet created no big chances and registered just two shots on target. Spartak's forty per cent possession produced four shots on target and a higher expected goals figure, suggesting they were the more dangerous side despite having less of the ball.
Zenit's problems were compounded by a late dismissal. Maksim Glushenkov received his second yellow card in the eighty-eighth minute and was sent off, leaving the visitors to finish the match with ten men. Spartak made several substitutions in the second half, bringing on R. Litvinov, Nino and A. Sobolev in the fifty-seventh minute alone, but did not need to push further for a result.
The victory extends Spartak's unbeaten run to eight matches across all competitions. They now have 13 points from six games, one ahead of Zenit, who sit third with 12 points after four wins and two defeats. The draw brought them together at the top of the table earlier this season, but this result has shifted the balance.
