Sutton United beat Altrincham 1-0 at the VBS Community Stadium in the National League on Saturday, August 15th. The hosts took all three points after a match decided by a single goal in the opening quarter. To be fair, the result felt inevitable given how the visitors struggled to create clear chances.
D. Ogbonna put the home side ahead in the ninth minute and never looked like losing his advantage. The goal came early enough to shift the tempo, and Sutton pressed on from there. By then, Altrincham had already started looking for ways to get back into the game.
N. Nzuzi picked up a yellow card in the 29th minute after a late challenge, and J. Taylor was brought on soon after. L. Weaver went off with a booking of his own in the 56th minute, replaced by N. Nzuzi in the 61st. The visitors tried to tighten things up but couldn't find their rhythm.
J. Cooper was shown yellow in the 70th minute, and that was the last card of the match. Sutton made three changes in the final ten minutes, bringing on C. Bell and D. Ogbonna in the 85th, then J. Hinchy in the 86th. They were content to hold what they had.
Both sides registered 87 attacks, but the difference was in efficiency. Sutton had three shots on target with 75 per cent accuracy, while Altrincham managed only one shot on target with 20 per cent accuracy. The visitors held 57 per cent possession but couldn't turn it into meaningful chances.
The victory keeps Sutton fifth in the table with 12 points from six games, while Altrincham remain 12th on nine points. The hosts have now won four of their opening six matches, a run that began with a 3-0 thrashing of Woking. Altrincham's loss ends a two-game unbeaten streak and leaves them two points off the play-off places.
