Twente women opened their third match of the Eredivisie season with a commanding 5:1 win against Heerenveen at home on Saturday. The result keeps them top of the table with three victories from three games.
To be fair, the gulf between these sides was already written in the standings before kickoff. Twente sit nine points clear at the summit, while Heerenveen remain winless at the foot of the table after three defeats.
And here's the thing about Twente's start — they took the points they needed against the side most likely to hand them over. They had the game won inside twenty minutes by the look of things, though the exact moment escapes me.
Heerenveen's run of poor form has continued unabated. They lost their previous three matches, including a 1:2 defeat to Feyenoord and a narrow 0:1 loss against De Graafschap. Three losses and zero points does not make for comfortable reading.
The statistics tell the story without embellishment. Twente controlled 61 per cent of possession and registered 79 attacks compared to Heerenveen's 45. They landed five shots on target from nine corners, while their opponents managed just two shots on target.
By then the result was a foregone conclusion. Twente have one foot ahead of the pack with a perfect record, and Heerenveen will need to find answers quickly if they want to climb out of tenth place.
