Wigan Warriors chase treble amid Super League-NRL deal
Wigan have won 16 straight games and top Super League, as the NRL nears a £35m deal for administrative control of the competition from 2027.
Super League is close to handing administrative control of the competition to the National Rugby League from 2027, in a deal that would bring clubs around £35m over five years.
The move stalled for much of the summer, but it is understood to be on the verge of approval following a meeting on Friday, with almost all clubs now in favour. Finer details are still to be settled, but with that level of support the NRL is set to take over the running of Super League from 2027 and push the competition's off-field growth.
Wigan's unbeaten run
On the field, little has changed. Wigan Warriors have won 16 consecutive matches in all competitions, a run that started with the Challenge Cup final in May.
They have beaten every side put in front of them since. Matt Peet's team dismantled Leeds to go top of Super League, then thrashed Catalans Dragons to secure the League Leaders' Shield, completing the second leg of a possible domestic treble.
A grand final win in three weeks would complete it. The odds on that have been shortening by the week.
Should the NRL takeover go through as expected, it would arrive with a familiar name dominating the competition it is about to help run.
