Shaun Edwards joins Red Roses coaching staff on consultancy deal
Former France defence coach Shaun Edwards will work with John Mitchell's England women through the WXV Global Series, including the North America tour.
Shaun Edwards has joined the Red Roses coaching staff on a short-term consultancy deal, He will work with the squad for the rest of the WXV Global Series, including the three-Test tour of North America next month.
Edwards left France earlier this year after helping Fabien Galthie's side to another men's Six Nations title, his seventh as a coach with Wales and France. He spent a decade at Wasps between 2001 and 2011. The former rugby league international has never coached his country, despite saying more than once that he was interested.
He met up with the squad this week. The Red Roses are looking to recover from a draw with Canada on Saturday that ended their run of 39 matches without defeat. They face New Zealand at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.
England head coach John Mitchell said he had long competed against Edwards and respected his record.
«Shaun and I have competed against each other in the international coaching arena for a very long time and I am very respectful of what he has delivered. I’m looking forward to learning and working with him,».
Mitchell said the two spoke after Edwards' time with France ended, and that Edwards expressed an interest in working in an international women's set-up for the first time. He added that Sarah Hunter is looking forward to learning from Edwards on the defensive side, alongside the rest of the coaching group.
