Daryl Powell: Wakefield Trinity building towards historic moment

Wakefield Trinity travel to Wigan on Saturday with a place in the Grand Final at stake, having finished the regular Super League season in fourth, the best placing in the club's history.

It is a long way from 2023, when Trinity lost their first 15 games in a row and dropped out of Super League. They came back up at the first attempt. The turnaround has been paid for by local kitchens businessman and boyhood fan Matt Ellis, whose investment is put at close to £10 million. Ellis took over as the club went down and brought in Daryl Powell as head coach.

Powell recalled what Ellis asked of him at the start.

«When I first came, Matt said, ‘I’d like you turn black and white into colour’,».

The last time Trinity were near the top of the game was the 1960s. If they win at Wigan, this may be the season that ends that wait.

Trinity's last Wembley appearance came in 1979, and their last spell of real standing came before that, in the 1960s.
