About the player
Brynjólfur Andersen Willumsson made his name at Groningen in August 2025, when five goals in four matches earned him the Eredivisie Player of the Month award — the first time a Groningen player had received the honour. He had already announced himself in the Netherlands earlier, topping the Eredivisie scoring charts in the early weeks of the 2024–25 season after his move from Norway.
Willumsson came through the Breiðablik academy, breaking into the first team in 2018 and going on to score seven goals in 41 league appearances before adding three more appearances in 2021. A free transfer took him to Kristiansund BK in March 2021, where he spent three seasons scoring 12 goals in 74 league games, playing through the club's relegation from the Eliteserien and their subsequent spell in the Norwegian First Division. Groningen paid €75,000 for him in July 2024.
Willumsson represented his country at the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. His senior debut came on 13 January 2024 against Guatemala, and he marked it by scoring. He has since won ten senior caps.
At club level, he won the Fotbolti.net Cup A in 2019 and again in 2021.
