About the player
Thom van Bergen came through the FC Groningen academy after joining from VV Gorecht in 2015. He signed his first professional contract in December 2022, then committed further with a new three-year deal, with an option for a fourth, in July 2023. In the 2023/2024 Eerste Divisie season, he was instrumental in Groningen's promotion to the Eredivisie, scoring nine goals and adding six assists from midfield.
In the 2025/2026 Eredivisie season he has continued to contribute goals and assists for Groningen.
Van Bergen has also been a regular for the Netherlands at youth level. He has earned caps for the U21 side and scored against Romania in a friendly, as well as against Ukraine at the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. A call-up to the senior Netherlands side has not yet followed.
Right-footed and born in Haren, part of the municipality of Groningen, he has built his career entirely within the club that developed him, from schoolboy football through to first-team football in the Eredivisie.
