Damián Suárez

Damián Suárez built a career on staying power. He came through Defensor Sporting in Montevideo, making his professional debut there in 2007 and winning the Uruguayan Primera División title in his first full season before a move to Spain took him to Sporting Gijón in 2011.

The transfer that mattered most came in 2015, on a free from Elche to Getafe, where he had already helped push the club up to La Liga in the 2012/13 season. At Getafe he stopped being a passing figure and became the team's backbone: 295 official appearances and the captain's armband, with promotion back to the top flight secured after Getafe won the Segunda División in 2016/17. Suárez was still there when his contract ran out in early 2024.

A free transfer took him to Botafogo in February 2024, but he was released within months, and by September he was back in Uruguay, presented at Peñarol. That spell ran only to the end of his contract in December 2025, and he moved on to Club Atlético Cerro, where he has featured regularly, including 31 appearances in the 2025 Primera División and a further 17 in the 2025/2026 campaign.
